Requirements for referral: The National Library is open to all those who wish to consult the collections for material not otherwise available through the public library service or an academic library.

Printed Music: To consult printed music, a Reader’s Ticket is required in addition to a Music PAL Card.  To obtain a Reader’s Ticket, a Reader’s Ticket Application Form must be submitted in person at the Information/Ticket Desk in the Library’s entrance hall. All applications must be supported by current identification and 2 passport-size photographs. Passport photographs can be obtained in the Library’s shop. Information / Ticket Desk opening hours: Mon – Wed: 9.30am – 9pm, Thurs & Fri: 9.30am – 5pm, Saturday: 9.30am – 1pm

Manuscript Music: To consult manuscript music, readers must obtain a Manuscript Reader’s Ticket in addition to a full Reader’s Ticket and Music PAL Card. Application for a Manuscript Ticket must be made in person to the Archivist on Duty in the Manuscripts Reading Room. Please note that the Archivist on Duty service is not available anyday during lunchtime (12.30 – 2pm) or after 5pm on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday evenings. At these times, Manuscript Readers’ Tickets can be obtained from the Librarian on Duty in the Main Reading Room.

Statement of access to resources: The National Library of Ireland is a research library, not a lending library. Readers must consult Library material in one of our Reading Rooms.

Printed Music: The printed music collections are located in the main Library building on Kildare Street. The Main Reading Room provides seating for 75 readers. Of these, 8 places are reserved for those consulting restricted collections. All tables have facilities for laptop use and eight large tables are reserved solely for consulting large format material.

Manuscript Music: Manuscript music is held in the Library’s Department of Manuscripts which is located at 2-3 Kildare Street. The Manuscripts Reading Room is situated on the second floor.

Services provided in the Library’s Reading Rooms include: reference assistance, online access to the Library’s catalogues and databases, access to the manual catalogues, a collection of open access reference works, self-service photocopiers, reprographic service, and a range of online resources.

Readers may use the self-service photocopier or their own digital cameras in the Manuscripts Reading Room to copy certain manuscripts from the holdings of the NLI for the purpose of research or private study.
